On behalf of her non-profit clients, Kay develops innovative legal and human rights based solutions that work in tandem with community organizing and advocacy efforts. Her initiatives increase support for access to reproductive rights and religious freedom, advance gender equality and work to prevent family violence and promote women's economic security.

Kay’s clients have included the Irish Family Planning Association (Dublin, Ireland), Footsteps, Guttmacher Institute, YWCA of Brooklyn, UN Women and others.

Kay is well known for her groundbreaking work preserving the parenting rights of people leaving ultra-religious communities. As a legal consultant for the non-profit organization Footsteps, she works in partnership with legal non-profits and has recruited some of America's leading law firms in legal reform work that has received national attention and allowed parents to maintain relationships with their children.
